The whole palace took about five years to complete. It was designed to be identical to a similar palace that he saw and loved during his time in Italy. The palace was the central point of this part of Cairo which was the crossroads of eight main roads. It was the home to a number of incredible people which included Palestinian President Yasser Arafat.

In 1961, the Health Education Museum was moved from Abdeen to the Sakakini Palace when one of the heirs of Sakakni who was a doctor that gave control of the palace to the Egyptian Ministry of Health. The palace is under the administration and management of the Supreme Council of antiquities as an important Coptic and Islamic attraction filled with precious antiquities.

Gabriel Habib Sakakini Pasha was a brilliant Syrian noble and businessman who gained the title of one of the wealthiest contractors during his time period. He arrived in Egypt in 1869 to work on the Suez Canal in the digging process in port said, he then moved to Cairo where he constructed one of the most beautiful and enchanting palaces in the capital. He lived between 1841 to 1923.

He had a close relationship with the Khedive as he was responsible for solving the mice problem in the Suez canal by releasing hungry cats and completing the Khedivial Opera.
