The heavenly Elephantine Island is a piece of heaven filled with natural gems and colossal marvels that is just downstream of the First Cataract, which has a length of 1,200 m (3900 ft) and a width of 400 m (1300 ft). It is one of the oldest destinations in Egypt, dating to the Second Intermediate Period (1650–1550 BC), where it stood as a fort that marked the southern border of Egypt. Elephantine was the home of the ram-headed god of cataracts, Khnum, who acted as the controller and guardian of the waters of the Nile River. It was one of the leading suppliers of granite for monuments and structures found all over Egypt. Due to its essence importance, it became in 1979 a World Heritage Site.

Some of the tombs in the valley belong to the high-ranking wives of Ramesses I, Seti I, and Ramesses II, and the most famous tomb in the valley includes the resting place of the beloved Hathor Queen Nefertari (1290–1224 BCE).
