Archaeological mission from the Netherlands and Italy from the Egyptian Museum in Turin and the Leiden Museum in the Netherlands, working in the Saqqara area under the supervision of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, has successfully discovered a tomb belonging to a person named "Banhse" from the time of the Ramesside period during the 19th dynasty (1292-1189 BC) who was the divine guide for the Temple of Amun which was found in the Saqqara Necropolis. This discovery was made during the current excavation season at the site.
Missions of excavations have been operating in this area since 1975 by archaeological teams from the National Museum of Antiquities in Leiden (RMO) and since 2015 by the Egyptian Museum in Turin (Museo Egizio). Dr. Mustafa Waziri, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, stated that the mission also succeeded in uncovering several other tombs and burials from the same time period which will shed light on the hidden treasures of the Saqqara Necropolis and explore the role which it played during the Ramesside period plus uncover the history of a number of extraordinary individuals who has have been hidden from history.
This discovery supports previous theories that the area between the tombs of the eighteenth dynasty (such as the Mayan tomb) was reused during later periods to build tombs and burials during the Ramesside period. The inscriptions found in these burials shed light on the funerary practices of the deceased during this time period.
Regarding the layout of the tomb, Dr. Mohamed Youssef, director of the Saqqara Antiquities Area, explained that it takes the form of a standalone temple with an entrance gate, an inner courtyard containing stone column bases, a well leading to underground burial chambers, and three small adjacent burial niches. There are a number of inscriptions and carvings which is able to witness the funerary.
Dr. Christian Greco, director of the Egyptian Museum in Turin and head of the Italian team, announced that a painting was found inside the tomb depicting the tomb's owner, Banhse, and his wife Baya, who held the title of "Amun's Singer". The painting shows a beautiful scene of Banhse worshipping the goddess Hathor of love and healing, as well as a scene of Banhse and his wife Baya standing together before a sacrificial table, with a bald man wearing a leopard skin over his shoulder standing next to them. Additionally, several scenes of priests and offerings were also found.
Dr. Lara Weiss, the curator of the Egyptian and Nubian collections at the Leiden Museum in the Netherlands, stated that the mission also discovered the remains of four small burial niches, two of which contain several inscriptions, including one for a person named Yuyo, and another for a person named Wadjetrenpet and a woman named Renena. The other two niches contained the remains of a mummy and a wooden coffin.
